This year more than ever has shown why having a solid foundation of self-care rituals is crucial. Some of us may be able to notice when others need help, but it is as important to be self-aware and prioritize our own well-being. And at Flawless when it comes to self-care we don’t just talk the talk, we also walk the walk. At our weekly team meeting, our team of Flawless interns shared their favorite self-care routines that they have been practicing.

These are such tough times where we are all experiencing feelings of anxiety in our own way. Self-care for me is mitigating these feelings of anxiety by taking ownership and controlling what is in my power to control. By doing that, I physically write a list of daily tasks that I want to accomplish as opposed to letting them build-up and consume me.

Since I have been home, I have really been away from the fast pace of school and spending time with my family. While I do still have grad school and job applications to complete over the holidays, I have been prioritizing my self-care through two of my favorite creative and artistic outlets: painting and playing piano. I bought four large canvases and have been making my way through them and have been spending about an hour each day playing the piano! They are both such great breaks from work and are great stress-relievers!

Finals can be a stressful time, especially during a pandemic with online classes. I like to take frequent breaks from studying to make sure I don’t burn out. Also, at the end of the day, I prefer to take note of all that I was able to accomplish rather than what I was not.

With finals taking up a significant amount of time for me right now, my self-care strategy has been to be in tune with how I am feeling. If I am studying or completing an assignment, I am making a conscious effort to be aware of how productive I am being and letting myself take breaks when needed.
Study self-care tip:
In order to minimize distractions, I have started putting sticky notes on my phone screen with short motivational quotes to discourage me from using it to text or go on social media. If I find that it is still getting too distracting, I put the sticky noted phone in a desk drawer or in another room to create barriers that further prevent me from using it.

While I am currently working through finals, something that helps me is thinking about the things that I look forward to once finals season is over. This has definitely helped me stay motivated to work hard and stay on top of things.

During these tough times, I make sure to take care of myself and to listen to myself. When I am feeling tired I know that I need rest. When I am feeling burnt out I know that it may be a good time to stop studying and shift my focus for a bit. Being creative for me is key. In our meetings, Janine often repeats one of my favorite tips that I always say, “ Feel your feet on the ground”
