In keeping with the spirit of justice for all and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., The Kennedy Satcher Center for Mental Health Equity hosted the first session of the “Criminal Justice and Equity: Bridging the Gaps” Webinar Series. Moderated by Madhuri Jha, this important roundtable featured many influential and inspiring panelists, including LaShawn Warren, Lourdes Rosado, John Hart and Megan Douglas. The panelists shed light on what needs reform within our criminal justice system. This topic is often overlooked, and we are thankful for the work of the Kennedy Satcher Center for Mental Health Equity and its continued commitment to these challenging social issues.
Patrick Kennedy opened Session One by emphasizing how we should all focus on protecting society rather than re-victimizing society. In the introduction, Daniel Dawes echoed our commitment to brain health when he noted how mental equity is integral to overall health equity. As the panel began, LaShawn Warren highlighted, “There has to be an acknowledgment that we have a flawed system.” John Hart then asked an important question, “How do we use relationships to actually heal?” Additionally, Megan Douglas pushed us to evaluate not only the laws and policies that are currently in place but also their health outcomes. Everyone featured in this discussion offered great insight and challenged us all to think critically about the systems that are currently in place.
The Kennedy Satcher Center for Mental Health Equity is committed to mental health parity and health equity.
