This week, I had the incredible opportunity of interviewing Jennifer Baez, a trauma-trained somatic coach, yoga teacher, mindfulness educator, and sound healer. Jennifer has been leading transformative Flawless Wellness Workshops at NAMI, creating nurturing spaces encouraging healing, self-reflection, and growth.
During our conversation, Jennifer shared powerful insights about somatic healing, the body-based approach to regulating the nervous system, and fostering emotional balance. Her work combines somatic coaching, yoga, mindfulness, and sound healing, all aimed at helping people reconnect with their bodies and find inner calm.
When discussing how she guides participants through her NAMI workshops, Jennifer spoke about using practical tools such as shaking and swiping, eye exercises, tapping, self-holding, and breathwork. These movements, she explained, help us tune into our parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems, the parts of our body responsible for stress and relaxation responses. By learning to orient our minds and bodies through these exercises, we can restore balance and calm. There are primitive elements in some of our movements that we have suppressed, but through somatic exercises, we release tension.
Jennifer also emphasized that overcoming overwhelming stress and traumatic experiences requires more than just talking. “We must connect the mind and body,” she shared, reminding us that true healing comes from embodied awareness. She encouraged everyone to embrace their own healing journey, no matter how it looks, and to approach it with patience and self-compassion.
When asked about her personal self care, Jennifer’s practices were inspiring. She shared that she begins each morning by centering herself, checking in with how she feels, and taking time for reflection. Her guiding motto, self-care + self-compassion = self-transformation, is one that beautifully captures her holistic approach to wellness.
Jennifer left us with a message of hope: that by staying connected to our bodies and nurturing ourselves through mindful movement and breath, we can cultivate resilience and experience profound, lasting healing.
Our conversation with Jennifer was both informative and deeply impactful. It inspired many of us to incorporate simple, accessible techniques into our daily lives as small but powerful steps toward balance. Jennifer reminded us of the transformative power of slowing down, tuning in, and showing ourselves compassion.
