Addressing mental health issues is one of the most important issues facing today’s society. Nearly 1 in 5 Americans over the age of 18 live with some form of a brain disorder, making up approximately 20% of the United States population. In Oregon alone, that number increases to 25%, with the state’s suicide rate among the highest in the country.
During the crucial developmental years, Americans spend a majority of their time in school, making the classroom the logical place to start conversations regarding mental health and wellness. Increasing awareness and instilling a working vocabulary to discuss brain health needs to start early.
Logan Lynn, musician, writer, mental health advocate, LGBT activist and founder of “Keep Oregon Well” (KOW), is doing just that.
“Keep Oregon Well” is a public advocacy campaign and social movement designed to change the way society perceives behavioral health challenges and builds trauma-informed care within a safe, supportive community. Logan and his team at KOW have created a mental health initiative that speaks directly to us all and especially students in schools. Starting these conversations helps create the opportunity for others to seek the support they need.
Logan recognizes that speaking out about these issues can be intimidating. By sharing his personal journey with mental health and addiction challenges,Logan hopes to lead by example to help create a supportive, inclusive space for others. KOW seeks to set off a positive chain of actions that will result in more awareness and better care.
