We recently had the opportunity to attend Tivity Health’s Connectivity Summit on Rural Aging, where we were truly inspired by the powerful words of Congressman Joe Kennedy. Through his insightful words, Congressman Kennedy aimed to focus on solutions that would reverse social isolation amongst our older population, noting his deep ties to this movement for change. One of the most poignant aspects of his speech was when he referred to his own Grandmother, Ethel Kennedy and how close they are. He also shared about the importance of grandparents and the caring relationships his children have with their grandparents.
Congressman Kennedy echoed sentiments that many grandchildren for generations have realized – Grandmas are often right! Listening to his stories full of wisdom offered by his grandparents, I was reminded of the advice my own grandmother shared with me. My grandma is an amazingly humble woman who was a serial entrepreneur, building business after business from one challenge to the next. From selling jewelry to exporting truffles, my grandma dominated each industry with grace. During my professional journey, I repeatedly turn to her for advice. Each time I am left more inspired and motivated than before. Sitting across from her in her little kitchen that was designed in the 1970’s she reminds me to take risks but lovingly but sternly adds that I shouldn’t be reckless. I find that this grandmotherly advice always guides me to be a better person.
Today as we celebrate grandparents everywhere we need to lead with gratitude. Thank them for making us eat “more,” thank them for spoiling us (sneaking the extra bar of chocolate), but most importantly thank them for their wisdom and unwavering support. Today, go out and show your appreciation, it doesn’t have to be extravagant, could be a card, a call, a visit or just a simple supper in their 70’s dining room. I know that’s where I’ll be.
