I started my internship with the Flawless Foundation during my senior year of high school. Throughout the past year, I have been able to learn valuable communication skills and much more about working in the field of mental health. I have been able to expand my education about brain health outside of my high school curriculum and actively work with a subject I’m passionate about.
While I have been working with Flawless, I have seen our team share both a great message and continue to grow as an organization within the field of mental health. Though I knew little about the field of mental health prior to my internship, I have been able to see different careers in action and figure out how I might be able to work in the future. In addition to learning more about mental health, I also got to work with many new project management and digital media programs and develop my professional and organizational skills. Speaking with other high school students has shown me that most people are left to essentially teach themselves how to work in the field in which they lack experience or education.
Though I was the only Flawless intern still in high school this year, I was also able to learn a lot from the other interns and the rest of the team. While we all work at different times and from different locations, the Flawless team members each bring their own spirit into the organization. Mental health has always been a relevant topic in my life, and I have thoroughly enjoyed being able to learn about advocacy, community resources, legislation, and brain health in general.
There are always so many more niche skills and ideas to learn with each new experience, and the Flawless experience has been incredibly valuable to me. I know that working at Flawless has prepared me for the transition to college and has given me important life knowledge and connections to people who work in mental health. All in all, I am so grateful to have gotten a sense of what it would be like to work in this type of environment. I expect that this experience will only help me in my future endeavors in the field of mental health, as I learned valuable information about communication software, social media, and was able to gain a perspective that I never could have experienced without this internship. I am lucky to have worked for such a Flawless organization, and I look forward to seeing where this experience takes me in the future.
