Being grateful can really change your life, and there’s science behind it. You can express gratitude for anything in your life, tangible or otherwise. Gratefulness has been proven to affect overall happiness by improving one’s career, social life, and even physical health. Simply acknowledging what you are grateful for can make a big difference in your life. Appreciation is an important tool to achieve a greater sense of satisfaction in life: it can help you focus on what you have, rather than what you wish you had.
Gratitude can be expressed via a variety of methods. Finding different ways to express your thankfulness can be difficult to incorporate into daily life at first, but using these practices will lead to a happier and more fulfilled life. Harvard Medical School Health Publishing suggests several ways to practice gratitude:
- Writing thank you notes
- Thanking someone mentally
- Keeping a gratitude journal
- Counting your blessings
- Meditation or prayer
