Patrick Kennedy’s letter announcing the Kennedy Forum
“This October marks the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy’s signing of the Community Mental Health Act, the landmark bill that laid the foundation of contemporary mental health policy. President Kennedy’s call to action in 1963 was based on a belief that all Americans – including those with mental illnesses, intellectual disabilities, and addictions – have a right to lead dignified lives and to share in the benefits of our society. His vision still guides us today.
I am proud and honored to continue in my uncle’s footsteps to create a national conversation that will allow us to remove the stigma surrounding mental illness and to once and for all achieve parity by treating the brain the same way we treat the rest of the body. By joining the Kennedy Forum, you are lending your voice to the launch of a bold, ongoing effort to advance the work President Kennedy began. Thank you for helping the mental health, substance use, and intellectual disability community make continued progress.”
